Features to look for in the BEST OUTDOOR WOOD FURNACE are…

  • A firebox that is made out of high quality 1/4″ mild steel. Quarter inch is the right thickness. That is why a good firebox won’t rust through, split, crack or warp!
  • Remember, steel can be too thick to efficiently transfer heat, which is why we recommend using a 1/4″ firebox. If the firebox is made out of steel thicker than that, heat will take longer than necessary to transfer to the water in the boiler.
  • An Electronic Control System (ETC). A precise controller provides one convenient center for operating the temperature settings, blower, reset, water level indicator and night light all with an easy-to-read digital display.
  • A forced air fan. Some wood boiler makes and models don’t have this. The best furnaces will have a fan that blows air through the front door into the side of the fire.
  • A good warranty! The best will have at least a 5 year warranty for the firebox and a 2 year warranty that covers parts AND labor! Many warranties only cover parts or you have to ship the furnace back to the manufacturer!
  • Buy your furnace from a reputable source. Make sure you don’t buy your furnace off of eBay. An eBay outdoor wood furnace may not come with the factory warranty and you will not get the same customer service!

We have a complete walkthrough of the WoodMaster 4400 boiler which you can watch below.

1/4″ Thick High Quality Mild Steel Round Firebox With Few Welds

Few welds in the cylinder that makes up the firebox so it doesn’t weaken the structure, break or warp. It is made of a solid piece of tubular steel! It will not RUST through with proper water treatment! Will not split and crack like Stainless Steel from the expansion and contraction!

We also have an ash auger system! Some other makers don’t even have a method to remove ashes!! That makes it HARD to clean out! You have to let the fire die down or move the burning wood aside to scoop out hot ashes. OUCH!

Wood is a natural, renewable energy resource. Think of wood as solar energy that has been stored in trees! You can harvest it from your own land or buy it locally, which keeps the value in your neighborhood instead of being given to a big energy company far away.[/pullquote]

There are steps you can take to conserve fuel and produce less smoke. For example, by buying your firewood early and storing it out in the open to dry for at least the summer, you’ll get more heat for every dollar you spend.”[/pullquote]

Questions about Stainless Steel answered

Do you build with stainless steel?
No, we don’t build stainless for several really good reasons. Our furnaces last longer than stainless with MANY furnaces still in use from day one!!

1. Mild steel transfers heat better than stainless does.
2. Stainless is a great sales feature, but little else, since most companies use cheap stainless, like a car’s exhaust system. There are many grades of stainless out there.
3. Since stainless is so expensive, the fireboxes are made really thin. Some are no thicker than the metal in a 55 gallon barrel or the thickness of a trailer fender!! That’s why you see so many split and broken apart.
4. Stainless is more prone to stress cracks, so why use it?
5. Unless the stainless is retreated after welding, you’ve lost all of it’s properties through the heating of the metal. And it’s being welded to mild steel anyway, so what’s the use?

Like I said, it’s a great sales feature but our 1/4″ high quality mild steel furnace heats better, doesn’t crack and split – and lasts longer! If stainless was better, we’d surely be using it.
